Meet Sydney Hubbel

Welcome to the professional portfolio of Sydney Hubbel. Sydney is a British-American writer currently residing in Scotland. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Writing Practices with a minor in History from California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt in 2018. Sydney completed a Master of Letters degree in Ethnology and Folklore through the Elphinstone Institute at the University of Aberdeen in 2022.

Sydney has worked as a freelance editor, book designer, and portrait artist. Outside of her freelance work, Sydney has worked in several industries, including events management, financial management, childcare, education, publishing, and food safety. She currently works as a document controller for a leading food safety company.

Writings

Sydney recently completed her first novel, The Rest Will Follow, the first in a speculative fiction tetralogy, totaling at 103 thousand words. She is currently submitting her work to literary agents in the hopes of pursuing publication. Prior to beginning her novel, Sydney has published short works of fiction and nonfiction in literary magazines and anthologies. As part of her postgraduate studies, Sydney completed the research and writing of a twenty thousand word ethnographic study on the use of tattoos as a method of storytelling. Publishing Experience

Sydney works as a freelance, project-based editor and book designer for authors wishing to self-publish. She has worked closely with, edited, and designed the collections of poet and actress Elexandra Halee. Examples of her work can be found in this portfolio under Publications.

Sydney was an editor of Toyon Multilingual Journal of Art and Literature from 2016 to 2018. Throughout her two years with Toyon, she acted as a Literary Criticism Editor, the Typesetter and Production Team Lead, and the Assistant Managing Editor. Though she has held positions across the board, her favourite role has been that of Typesetter. It is through this role that she found a passion for book design, as she designed and set the interior and cover of Volume 64 of the journal and subsequent marketing materials. She is versed in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, the Chicago Manual of Style, and MHRA citation style

Book Reviews

Sydney recently registered as an advanced reader and reviewer through NetGalley. She uses knowledge obtained from her BA in English and MLitt in Ethnology and Folklore to inform her analysis of storytelling in her reviews. Sydney hopes to accept Advanced Reader Copies (ARC) directly from publishers as she grows her reviewer profile.

Hobbies and Interests

Sydney is an avid gamer with a passion for fantasy and adventure RPGs and survival simulators. Like gaming, most of her interests revolve around creativity and exploration. Sydney enjoys painting, digital illustration, crochet, cooking, and exploring the Scottish woodlands with her dog and her partner. She is always looking for new things to make and new places to visit.
